We receive many requests from clients that tell us they want their site built using Wordpress. Sometimes this is the right solution for your needs, but it’s best to look a little deeper into your website details to make sure Wordpress is the right choice for you.
The first question you need to ask is: What special functionalities do you need on your website? Functionalities are elements on a website that the users interact with, such as an image gallery, calendar, membership, e-commerce, sign-up form, etc. Since Wordpress is the most popular CMS (content management system), it has over 54,000 plugins available. Plugins are pieces of software that can be added to your website which accommodates special functionalities. Whatever service you need to provide on your website, you can most likely find a plugin which accomplishes what you need. And a lot of these plugins are free to download and add to your Wordpress site.
Plugins make it easy for you to add any component to your site without having to touch (or disturb) any of the site’s cod, however some plugins are developed by third parties and may not be up to date. If the plugin is old, it may have outdated code that will not work on your site or might make your site vulnerable to hackers. Another potential issue is that some plugins don’t play nice with each other. So, for example, let’s say you have a plugin that creates a social media stream and another plugin that creates a gallery on your site. You might have the social media stream up and running and then you add a gallery plugin, and now your social media stream stopped working. Now you have to find a different gallery plugin that plays nice with the other plugins on your site - and this can be time-consuming.
Wordpress is the highest target for hackers since so many people use it. Wordpress is constantly creating newer versions with more features and security. It is critical that you keep your website up to date because this helps prevent hackers from inserting malicious code. You also need to update your plugins which can also leave your website vulnerable for attacks. These updates should be done by a professional website developer because there is a chance that an update could break the website. Also, you need to have site backups available in case this happens. Having a professional web designer/developer login and do some routine checks for updates approximately every 1-3 months.
“I want a web developer to build my Wordpress site but I want to maintain it.” This is a very common request we receive and we can accommodate it, but we do have to provide you with some warnings:
If you have read this far and still believe a Wordpress site is right for you, it is best to have an educated and experienced web developer keep it updated. Avenue25 offers Wordpress maintenance plans that include hosting your site on our servers as well as maintaining your site to ensure that it is always up to date and functioning optimally. This service also includes nightly backups so if anything happens to the site, we can always revert to the backup.
There’s a reason so many people use Wordpress. You can choose a template to run with plus access a variety of plugins that have already been created. However, if you don’t want to risk your website crashing from hacks or outdated plugins, we recommend using a different content management system called Modx.
Modx is not as well-known as Wordpress because you need a trained and proficient developer to build it. It is an open-source CMS which means the developer works directly in the website’s code and has complete control. Here are the benefits of using Modx over Wordpress:
Yes! When we have our discovery meeting in the beginning, we can discuss what elements you would like to update yourself once the site is live and we can customize the backend to accommodate those needs. We will provide customized training videos showing how to make edits to your individual website.
Yes! We can help you on an as-needed basis or you can sign up for a maintenance plan that includes hosting and updates any time you need them.
Since Modx is open-source, we are building the site from scratch and it takes more time and costs more than a Wordpress site. Also, since it is less-known than Wordpress, there are not very many tutorials online showing how to make edits so you would need to use us as a resource for questions or problems (but hey, that is what we do!) It also doesn’t have plugins like Wordpress does, so if you need special functionalities, we would have to build them from scratch, or integrate a third party. For example, if you need a special form for users to fill out to create a custom cake, we would have to build that from scratch in the code, or we can use a third party to create the form and embed it onto the website.
That’s great! That means you are open to suggestions and learning more about which CMS is best for your website. Reach out to the creative professionals at Avenue25 and we can assist you to figure out the best solutions for your unique website needs.
